Guide to Seney National Wildlife Refuge

 


The Seney Wildlife Refuge is a wetland that sits on Michigan's Northern Peninsula between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Just a 7 minute drive away, it is a great location for hiking and scenic drives where you can spot moose and other wildlife in the area.

Open 7 days a week May 15th through October 15th, the Visitor center is only a short drive from your stay at Northland Outfitters.


Their hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and have an informational slideshow showing every half hour with incredible photographs of the refuge.

Wildlife in Seney National Refuge

The Seney Wildlife Refuge is located in a transition zone between the Great Lakes and the Northern Forest. As such, there are a number of species that call the refuge home. The refuge is home to a wide variety of birds including sandhill cranes, bald eagles, red-winged blackbirds, and a variety of waterfowl.


Other wildlife that can be spotted in the refuge include white-tailed deer, black bears, moose, and river otters. One of the best ways to experience the wildlife here is by taking a hike on the trails nearby the refuge.

Hiking near Seney Wildlife Refuge

Seney Wildlife Refuge does not offer any hiking trails, but there are a few nearby hiking spots that are great for hiking with kids. The Lake George Beach State Park is located just 2 miles east of Seney.


The park is known for its white sand beach and shallow water, making it a great place to visit with kids. There is also a small playground and picnic tables in the park. The Chequamegon Trail is a national scenic trail that runs right through the Seney Wildlife Refuge.


The trail provides an excellent hiking experience through both forest and wetland areas, and is rated as moderate as well as a great hike for families.



Scenic Drives near Seney Wildlife Refuge

The Seney Wildlife Refuge is located on the Lake Michigan Scenic Drive. This is one of the most scenic drives in the state and runs through the heart of the refuge. The drive provides a great way to see the wildlife in the refuge up close. You can find the Refuge at the end of the drive along Lake Michigan. The Lake Superior Scenic Drive runs along the shoreline of Lake Superior and through the Seney Wildlife Refuge as well.
 

One of the best ways to explore the wildlife and marsh landscape is by taking your car down Marshland Wildlife Drive. The 7-mile route takes you from the visitor center parking lot through the refuge. You’ll find spotting decks along the way where you can pull over to see eagles, osprey, loons and trumpeter swans.

Seney Wildlife Refuge Fishing

There are three great spots to go fishing near the Seney Wildlife Refuge. The Lake George Beach State Park is located just 2 miles east of the refuge. This is a great place to fish at low tide. The Big Blue River flows just east of the refuge and is a great place to fish in the spring and fall.


The Lake Michigan shoreline is one of the best places to fish in the area. There are also a number of shops in the nearby town of Sault Ste. Marie where you can rent equipment and get advice on where to fish in the area. The Seney Wildlife Refuge is a great place to visit if you want to explore the great outdoors and see some wildlife. There are plenty of nearby hiking trails and scenic drives that are great for families.
