Around 4000 years ago, ice sheets in America were melting away. Because the ice’s crushing weight was gone, the rock underneath became unburdened. This caused the beautiful rock formations around Lake Superior to rise up, creating one of the more unique sights on the northern Michigan peninsula.
Nowadays, people think of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore as a prime tourist attraction. Not only can you see these gorgeous rock formations, but you can participate in the many adventures and activities to give yourself a better view of the picturesque pillars.
Is Pictured Rocks dog-friendly?
Dogs are not only allowed but they are also actively encouraged to come to explore this natural wonder with their owners. Just make sure you are a responsible pet owner who bags your pet’s waste.
Can you cliff jump in Pictured Rocks?
You are not allowed to jump off any rock or piece of land that sits 15 feet above the water.

Pictured Rocks Hiking
Lakeshore hiking is a ton of fun! Better yet, most of these hikes are customizable, so whether you just want an easy hike or you are hoping for a backpacking experience, you’ll be able to find it.
North Country Trail
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 14 miles
This long walk on the beach offers a ton of opportunities for photoshoots! If you walk the entire coast, North Country Trail is pretty long, but you obviously aren’t required to do that.
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 3.1 miles
The end of this trail will celebrate your trek with an exploration of the Au Sable Point Lighthouse! You can take pictures, climb the lighthouse ($5 a person) and ask questions to the local rangers.
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 7.6 miles
This trail will guide you along the shoreline until you reach Log Slide Beach. It grants some excellent picture moments and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop and smell the lake air!
